Actinic Keratosis

pre cancer skin lesions, Mark S. Nestor, MD

Actinic keratosis (solar keratosis) are scaly, dry patches of skin that occur on the arms, face, scalp, neck, back of hands, and shoulders. They take years to develop and can often become large. The spots are caused by years of sun exposure. Most individuals first start to notice the scaly patches in their 40s. Typically, they cause no problems but in a small percentage of people, they can turn malignant.

Prescription topical creams can be used to smooth and diminish the appearance of the actinic keratosis. However, treatment options include freezing (cryotherapy), scraping, and photodynamic therapy to eliminate the lesions. The best way to diagnose and treat AKs is to see your dermatologist regularly.
