MelaFind for Melanoma

MelaFind®the world's first dermatologic analysis system, is a pioneering medical technology for dermatologists to use during a skin exam or mole check to help see below the skin's surface.

MelaFind® is the world’s first and only 100% objective, non-invasive, and painless medical device that analyzes irregular growth patterns under the surface of a mole.

Using a simple, hand-held imaging device that scans the skin, MelaFind® can help a dermatologist determine, in just under a minute, if a mole or skin lesion needs a closer look. Irregular moles an be harmless, but in some cases, they can be melanomas. Melanoma, if not treated early, can be very serious and life threatening.

MelaFind® has been clinically proven to correctly identify melanoma and is clinically proven to provide more information so that your dermatologist can determine whether an irregular mole is harmful. Our office is pleased to be one of the first in South Florida to offer this state-of-the-art technology for our patients.  Learn more about the science of finding and identifying melanoma, view the video below:

Zerona® is an FDA-approved body contouring procedure that uses safe, effective noninvasive techniques to remove excess fat from targeted areas of the body. Manufactured by Erchonia, Zerona uses low level laser energy to liquefy fat before it is absorbed naturally by the lymphatic system, allowing for a slimmed appearance in the waist, hips, thighs and nearly any other area of the body with localized fat deposits.

During each Zerona treatment session, the targeted body area is positioned under the laser for 20 minutes treating the front of the body and another 20 treating the backside. Each treatment session takes about 40 minutes to perform, during which time patients can read, listen to music or simply relax. There is no anesthesia required and no downtimes. Most patients require a series of six treatment sessions in order to achieve their desired results, although a specific treatment plan will be developed by your doctor based on your individual needs. Zerona® provides long-term and sustained results as these before and after photos show:

The Zeltiq procedure utilizes highly controlled cooling technology to safely and effectively reduce and eliminate fat cells from specific areas of the body.  Unlike traditional invasive surgical procedures, the Zeltiq procedure is non-invasive.  It delivers significant fat layer reduction in targeted areas to help contour the body and reclaim its natural shape.  The Zeltiq procedure requires no anesthesia or recovery time.  During the procedure, tissue is drawn into a cup with mild vacuum pressure that may initially cause some discomfort or an unfamiliar sensation.  Patients may also experience a mildly uncomfortable cold sensation that usually subsides within ten minutes after the procedure begins.  Once the procedure is complete, patients can immediately return to their normal activities including work and exercise.  In most patients, a single procedure is sufficient and will provide noticeable and measurable fat reduction in two to four months.

What is Ultherapy?

Ultherapy is a new type of a nonsurgical procedure that uses medical ultrasound for cosmetic improvement of the skin.  The Ulthera system delivers a low amount of focused ultrasound energy to the skin, at just the right depth to achieve a positive effect, leaving the surface of the skin undisturbed.  Your skin’s response to the energy is to stimulate the growth of new collagen for a firmer, tighter and more lifted appearance.  This is a no down time procedure and you can usually return to normal activities right away.  The regenerative process is initiated right away, but the full effect will build gradually over the course of two to three months.  The procedure does involve some mild discomfort but you do not need anesthesia during the procedure.  The treatment can be performed to a variety of areas of the face.  This can be advantageous for cosmetic improvement causing for example, the skin on the forehead to improve and lift the eyebrows and thus enhance the appearance of the eyes.  In addition, the treatment can be performed on the area of the cheeks to improve the area of the jowls.  Only one or two treatments are recommended for most patients, however some patients may require additional treatments.

Titan® Tissue Tightening

The procedure is done at the doctor’s office and takes 15 to 60 minutes depending on the size of the area. Most patients do not require any anesthetic, however, some patients prefer to take a mild pain reliever beforehand. During the procedure the doctor guides the Titan’s computer-controlled delivery device over your treatment area. You will feel a warming sensation as the infrared energy is delivered to the deeper layers of the skin. The energy causes the collagen support tissues to contract and tighten. The underside of the hand piece provides cooling to your skin’s surface, protecting it and keeping you more comfortable during treatment.

What Is The Recovery Like?

After treatment you may resume your normal activities immediately. You may notice some mild swelling and/or redness in the treatment area. This usually disappears in a few hours.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Several treatments may be required subject to your skin’s laxity, the area, and the results you desire. During your consultation your doctor will advise you as to the number and frequency of treatments needed to achieve your desired results. The results from Titan® Tissue Tightening are gradual and may take from three to six months to maximize the effects of treatment.

What Are The Benefits Of Titan Tissue Tightening?

  • Treats lax and sagging skin.
  • Treats any area of the body.
  • Stimulates long-term collagen growth.
  • Provides continual Cooling.
  • It is safe, comfortable and non-surgical.
  • Has no injections and no recovery.

What Results Can I Expect?

Loose and sagging skin can be tightened. Fine lines and wrinkles can fill in while deeper frown lines can be softened. Some patients see results quickly and are satisfied after only one treatment. Typically, for most patients the results are gradual as more collagen is produced and the skin tightens over a three to six month period.

Thermage® Tissue Tightening

The Thermage® Procedure is a revolutionary tissue tightening non-surgical face lift. Thermage works by heating the underlying layers of the skin with a unique delivery of radio frequency (RF) energy, all the while protecting the skin’s top layer with a cooling spray. The result is immediate collagen contraction, which, over time, will provide the skin with new collagen production.

Because the Thermage® Tissue Tightening Procedure is non-surgical there is no down time, no recovery time. You won't have to hide your face in bandages for several weeks after Thermage.

Collagen is to our skin what calcium is to our bones. It is our skin's support structure. Over time, collagen becomes depleted or damaged by the sun and other environmental factors, resulting in thin or loose skin. To counteract this, many opt for the traditional face lift, a process which literally picks the skin up and lifts it to give a tighter, more youthful appearance -- but this procedure does nothing to replace the skin's natural supply of collagen. Skin care experts have developed a non-surgical alternative to the traditional face lift.

If your skin is hanging around your eyes, jowls, neck, breasts or buttocks due to a loss of collagen you may qualify for this state-of-the-art procedure – cosmetic dermatology that is changing the way plastic surgery is performed.

Tattoo Removal

Friday, 02 March 2012 20:12 Written by

Tattoo removal using earlier methods such as dermabrasions, surgical excision and chemical peels are invasive, painful and often leave behind scars in place of the tattoo. The advent of lasers has ushered in a system that targets only the ink used in the tattoo process. With our advanced laser system, we can remove most tattoo inks safely and without leaving a scar. Medical lasers used to remove tattoos are designed to produce specific wavelengths of light that passes through the skin and is absorbed by the ink. The absorption of the light energy destructs the tattoo ink, which is then removed by the body’s natural filtering system.

Is the tattoo removal process painful?

The laser beams light in very short flashes of light or pulses. The impact of the energy from the intense pulse may feel similar to the snap of a rubber band on the skin. Most patients do not require anesthesia.

How many treatments will it take to remove the tattoo?

Large or heavy pigmented tattoos applied by a professional require multiple treatments and nonprofessional tattoos may require 3 to 4 treatments. All treatments should be spaced about 3 to 4 weeks apart. The number of treatments needed depends on the size, location, type and depth of the ink in the skin. Treatment sessions generally take from 10 to 30 minutes.

Is post-treatment care necessary?

Yes. The treated area should be kept clean (not scrubbed) with application of antibacterial ointment administered by your doctor.

SmoothBeam™ Laser

Friday, 02 March 2012 20:10 Written by

SmoothBeam™ Laser is a new, non-invasive, highly effective laser treatment to rejuvenate the skin by stimulating the body’s natural collagen-building process.  SmoothBeam™ skin treatment is a revolutionary way to combat the signs of aging and acne scarring.  This procedure stimulates healthier looking skin by using an infrared laser together with a cooling process to rejuvenate your skin from the inside out.  There are no harsh chemicals and no long recovery times. SmoothBeam™ treatments are gentle, safe and effectiveon all pigmentation and skin types.

What Conditions Does Smoothbeam™ Laser Treat?

Smoothbeam™ provides facial rejuvenation for fine lines around the lips and eyes, deeper lines and grooves that form in our brow, next to the nose and down to the corners of our mouth. It also helps improve surface irregularities such as pigment discolorations, acne scarring and active acne found on the face, neck, shoulders, upper back and chest.

How Does The Treatment Work?

SmoothBeam™ combines a cooling cryogen spray and a diode laser to give you optimal results with the least inconvenience.  The protective cooling spray is applied to the skin, allowing the SmoothBeam™ laser light to pass harmlessly through the upper layers of your skin to stimulate the cells deep below the surface that produce natural collagen.  The collagen and elastin fibers continue to multiply after your treatment, and you will continue to see improved results over the months ahead.  SmoothBeam™ also targets sebaceous glands to treat both inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions.  It works by causing thermal injury to these glands getting to the root cause of acne.

How long does a treatment take and how many treatments are necessary?

The SmoothBeam™ treatment is so quick and easy.  Many patients come in for treatment during their lunch hour.  The treatment takes between 15 and 30 minutes, and there are virtually no side effects.  You can reapply your makeup right away and carry on with you day.  Clinical studies suggest that an average of two to three treatments are needed to stimulate new collagen growth.  Treatments are typically performed 3 to 4 weeks apart.  We also recommend regular touch up treatments to sustain the continued growth of new collagen.

Restylane® is a cosmetic dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds of all types. It is also used to increase fullness and enhance the lips, define the lip line, fill scars and restore facial areas that have lost their youthful appearance.

What Is Restylane® Made Of And Is It Safe?

Restylane® is made of a non-animal hyaluronic acid, being a natural substance that already exists in the human body and is used to provide volume and fullness to skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane® is a crystal clear gel that is biodegradable and completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid. Because Restylane® is non-animal based and fully biocompatible it is safe and there is no risk of animal based disease or allergic reaction. Restylane® is FDA approved and has been safely used by dermatologists since 1996 worldwide.

What Are Restylane® Treatments Like?

The treatment is simple requiring no pre-testing and is performed at your doctors’ office in less than one hour. First the patient is given an anesthetic cream or block, making the treatment relatively painless. The doctor will then inject Restylane® into the treated area, under the skin with a very thin needle. The patient experiences no marks or scars and results are immediately visible producing a long-lasting, natural enhancement that is gentle and soft to the skin.

How Many Restylane® Treatments Do I Need?

New studies have shown that Restylane® lasts at least 18 months. Evidence shows that having a touch-up treatment before the product has fully dissipated will enhance the lasting effect. Depending on your desired appearance, you can discuss maintenance with your doctor and the period between treatments.

Scar and Stretch Marks

Friday, 02 March 2012 20:06 Written by

Scars are formed whenever multiple layers of skin are injured. Accidents, surgery, burn and even acne can cause scarring.

The exact cause of stretch marks is not known, but they are probably a result of a breakdown of collagen and elastin under the skin’s surface. The most common causes of stretch marks are pregnancy, body-building and weight loss. Parts of the body most frequently affected by stretch marks include breasts, abdomen, tights groin and buttocks.

How Does Scar and Stretch Mark Removal Work?

In the past, cryosurgery (freezing), excision, steroid injections, creams and ointments were standard treatments for the removal of scars and stretch marks. Today, several new techniques using lasers are available. The energy from the laser stimulates the skin under the scar to produce collagen. The skin thickens until it resembles the surrounding normal tissue.

Anesthesia is usually not required. Some patients experience slight stinting when the laser is applied to the skin. Multiple treatments may be necessary to achieve the desired result. About 70% of patients notice a marked improvement. To enhance the effect of the laser treatment, your physician may recommend glycolic acid or tretinoin cream both before and after treatment.

Am I a Good Candidate for Scar and Stretch Mark Removal?

New, shallow scars and stretch marks respond better to treatment than deeper, older scars and stretch marks. Candidates with fair complexions tend to see better results. There is a risk of discoloration in patients with darker skin tones. Your physician will review your medical history, age, skin type, pigmentation, and consider your desired result to determine the best course of treatment for you.

What Can I Expect After Scar and Stretch Mark Removal?

The treated area may be red for up to two weeks, but there should not be any other discoloration or markings on the skin. The concentrated laser does not affect surrounding tissue. Treated areas also tend to improve for three to six months following treatment. Some patients who do not see immediate result see up to 50% improvement at their six-month checkup.
